Karen Carpenter의 밝고 경쾌한 목소리는 그들 음악에 가장 중요한 요소 중 하나였다.  1970년대 이지 리스닝 계열의 남매 가수 Carpenters(카펜터즈)는 미국 코네티커트(CT)에서 태어났고 오빠인 Richard(리차드)는 고등학교의 밴드에서 건반악기를 연주하였고 캘리포니아의 주립대학에 다니면서 동생 카렌과 함께 팀을 이뤄 헐리우드에서 개최된 'Bowel Better of Bands Contest'에서 1위에 입상하기도 하였다. 이것을 계기로 RCA레코드사와 계약하면서 가수로서의 활동을 시작한 커펜터즈는 69년 발표한 "Close to you"를 불러 차트1위를 차지하였고, 계속해서"Sing", "Yesterday on-ce more", "Top of the world"를 발표함으로써 그들의 위치를 확고히 했다
